Developmental Disability Services

Through Georgia's DD waivers program - New Options Waiver (NOW) and the Comprehensive Supports Waiver Program (COMP), we provide home- and community-based services to adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) so that they can live in their homes or communities rather than in institutional settings.

What services are available?

Depending on the person's needs and approved service plan, DD waiver services may include:

  • Community access and community living supports
  • Personal care and assistance with daily living activities
  • Supported employment and job coaching
  • Transportation services
  • Respite care for family caregivers
  • Behavioral support services
  • Nursing and therapy services (physical, occupational, speech)
  • Specialized medical equipment and supplies
  • Home and vehicle modifications
  • Support coordination/case management
  • Residential services (primarily under COMP)

Difference between NOW and COMP

NOW Waiver

  • Designed for individuals who need less intensive support.
  • Often serves people living with family or independently in the community.
  • Focuses on helping individuals maintain independence and avoid needing more intensive services.

COMP Waiver

  • Designed for individuals with more intensive support needs.
  • Can include residential services such as group homes and extensive in-home supports.
  • Often used for individuals transitioning from institutions to community living or those who need ongoing comprehensive assistance.

Who is eligible?

Generally, an adult must:

  • Be eligible for Medicaid.
  • Have an intellectual disability or a related developmental disability (such as autism, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, or certain neurological conditions).
  • Have the disability originate during the developmental period (before age 18 for intellectual disability or before age 22 for related developmental disabilities).
  • Meet the level of care criteria for an Intermediate Care Facility for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities (ICF/I-DD).
